Rare Book Library : Florence, Italy

This project was an experiment into the study of loggias and townhouse typologies of Florence. The site was located in Piazza Brunelleschi, also extending into the Rotunda Brunelleschi. The site pushes the lower level shops up a level to create a public thoroughfare and double-height library stacks, connecting Via dei Servi to the site. This open-ness allows people to 'trickle' into the existing Piazza which has little usage, but is connected to a major University in Florence. A screening room and cafe make up two corners of the site, creating a 'courtyard' like space in the Piazza, and the Rotunda is transformed into a rare book library and reading room, with a second-story bridge into the upper library stacks.
