Apartment Complex : NYC

In Collaboration with Dana Hareli

This project is a product from the idea of super-adjacent city, a infrastructure that would exist above New York City's hudson yards and theater districts. Working as a unit, our studio teams developed sites in adjacent blocks to create a 'super-adjacent city'. Initial process was created in the form of 'concept-form' generators, a environmental or spacial effect created by different conditions (below).

The site location was above the existing Port Authority of New York City, on 42nd and 8th avenue. The proposed program of low-income housing units, theater and airship dock was required. New York City Zoning Codes and F.A.R. bonuses were then used to narrow down the possible 'site'. By using the zoning envelope, a massing strategy was created.

Considering the above explorations and constraints, a design of pre-cast housing units assembled in a tetris-style was proposed. These units worked around circulation cores which penetrated the existing Port Authority building to allow more light and open public space into the bus terminal. Void spaces were created that would house floating theaters and open public plaza space. At the very top, an airship landing was proposed, assuming that airship travel is a new infrastructure which exists within the city.
